Lindegaard in from cold as Burnley face keeper crisis
ANDERS LINDEGAARD is set to start his first game for almost two years as Burnley face a goalkeeping crisis for tonight’s Europa League qualifier against Aberdeen. England international Nick Pope dislocated his shoulder in the 1-1 draw at Pittodrie last week and Tom Heaton has a calf problem. Burnley were last night racing against time to sign a new goalkeeper in time for the second qualifying round second leg at Turf Moor.
Sportsmail understands discussions have taken place over Southampton’s Fraser Forster and Keiren Westwood at Sheffield Wednesday. UEFA rules state that the Clarets had until 11pm last night to register a new player but pushing a transfer over the line was proving difficult. The plan was to call up 31-yearold fourth-choice goalkeeper Adam Legzdins should they fail to land any other targets. Like Lindegaard, Legzdins has never started a senior game for the club since signing from Birmingham City in 2017. Former Manchester United stopper Lindegaard’s only minutes for the club came last week when the 34-year-old replaced the injured Pope. It is not ideal preparation as Sean Dyche’s side attempt to book a third qualifying round meeting with Istanbul Basaksehir next week. Dyche is yet to sign a single player this summer after Alfie Mawson performed a U-turn on a move from Swansea and looks set to join Fulham instead. Asked if a lack of depth, married with a run in the Europa League, could endanger their top-flight status, Dyche said: ‘If you’re a Burnley fan and you’ve got a chance of a mini-period in Europe would you take it? I think you would. ‘The club might have no choice but to break our transfer record (£15million) again. You would be in disbelief if I told you the numbers for some players. ‘You’d be flummoxed. If you heard their wages you wouldn’t believe it.’
