Family to say final farewell to son, 13, killed while driving

- By Neil Michael

A ‘PRECIOUS’ young boy killed when the car he was driving overturned and hit a ditch on Clare Island is due to be buried today.

Heartbroken family and friends of Morgan Pinder, 13, will gather at 1pm in the Church of the Sacred Heart on the Clew Bay island off Mayo’s coast.

Morgan was described on RIP.ie as the ‘loving youngest and cherished son’ of his grief-stricken parents Tom and Maureen.

Among those who he will be ‘deeply mourned by’ will be his brothers Christian, Dylan and Jack, grandparents Margaret and Tom Pinder and uncles, aunts, grand-uncles and aunts, cousins, school friends and the island community, the post added.

Morgan lay in repose at his family’s home in Gurteen yesterday. After Mass of the Resurrection today, he is to be buried nearby.

A brief but poignant message in the RIP.ie notice read: ‘Your time was short yet precious.’

The popular teenager is believed to have died instantly in the single-vehicle crash near his home in the early hours of Sunday.

It’s believed he was the only person in the car and it overturned after hitting a ditch. The alarm was raised shortly after 1am by passers-by.

Clare Island, with a population of 160, has been left numbed by the tragedy.

One resident said: ‘The August bank holiday weekend is normally one of the happiest and busiest times of the year for us. Now all we are thinking of is the pain of the bereaved family and the sadness of the funeral to come.’

Morgan’s remains were returned to the island on Sunday evening following a postmortem at Mayo University Hospital.
