Denise confronts her demons after breakdown

-

DENISE Welch has revealed she suffered a breakdown earlier this year.

The 60-year-old actress and TV presenter told Christine Lampard on ITV’s Lorraine yesterday that her dark moment came on a sunny holiday in Grenada with her husband Lincoln Townley. She said it was as if ‘all the colour has gone from your world’.

Denise, pictured left, has spoken openly in the past about her battle with depression.

She has also said that after quitting alcohol in 2012, she struggled with an eating addiction, and that she needed a lifestyle overhaul before losing two stone.

On the dark time in January, Denise told Newry native Christine: ‘I had a breakdown at the beginning of this year, I had sporadic episodes, but depression isn’t always brought on by circumstance.’

She continued: ‘I was sitting on a beach in Grenada with my husband and I felt my illness coming on me. It’s like all the colour disappears from your world.

‘I was in a very bad place, but I refer to it as an unwelcome visitor; he will always leave. It’s a battle he’ll never win because we have control. I live a much healthier life so I can fight it full-on. At 60 I’ve learned to look after myself.’

The former Coronation Street star was appearing on Lorraine to promote her new novel The Mother’s Bond, which tells the tale of a mother whose world is turned upsidedown when the son she gave up for adoption comes back into her life.

Denise told Christine that she has always had a fascination with adoption, after members of her family had gone through a similar process.
