Molly Martens’ jail term is increased for breaking rules

- By Neil Michael

KILLER Molly Martens could spend up to four more years behind bars for breaching rules.

Her scheduled release date is now 2041 instead of 2037.

She was sentenced last year alongside her father to between 20 and 25 years for the second degree – not premeditated – murder of her husband Jason Corbett from Limerick.

Father-of-two Jason Corbett, 39, was beaten to death with a brick and an aluminium baseball bat in the bedroom of his North Carolina home on August 2, 2015.

The prosecution proved they murdered Jason because he wanted to take his two children from his first marriage and leave Martens.

Martens, 34, pictured, had met the recently widowed Jason after he advertised for a nanny in 2008.

The length of time she spends behind bars has always depended on her good behaviour.

However, Martens, who is appealing her conviction, committed three breaches of prison rules between her conviction last August and May this year.

A custody hearing earlier this month decided she should be penalised for her behaviour.

As a result, three years and a little over eight months has been added to the scheduled release date of August 3, 2037.

If she serves until the new release date of April 15, 2041, she will be almost 57 years old. However, if she does not breach the rules again she may be eligible for early release around the 20-year mark of her sentence.

Martens and her father Thomas are seeking to overturn their convictions.

They have until September 13 to file their case with the appeals court.
