GUESS HOW MANY ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE AFTER CITY’S BUS CAME UNDER ATTACK LAST APRIL?

- By MIKE KEEGAN

MERSEYSIDE police have failed to make a single arrest more than five months after Manchester City’s coach was attacked by thugs outside Anfield before the Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool. Bottles, bricks and flares were launched at the vehicle carrying Pep Guardiola and his team on April 4. Thousands of pounds of damage was caused to the bus, with a replacement needed to take City home.

Police launched an investigation into the attack, which Sportsmail had warned was being planned weeks before the fixture after it emerged a group of Liverpool supporters were urging others to create a hostile reception for City. However, despite footage from inside the coach and a multitude of video clips of

the incident, police say they have ‘exhausted lines of enquiry’. Hours of CCTV and mobile phone footage has been studied, but to no avail. City declined to comment, although privately they are staggered that the investigation has drawn a blank. City return to Anfield next month for the first time since the fracas. Assistant Chief Constable Ian Critchley said: ‘Following the incident, detectives carried out an extensive investigation . . . and we worked with both clubs to obtain information and evidence in order to identify those involved. Unfortunately, footage viewed by detectives was clouded by smoke from flares thrown during the disorder or didn’t show the faces of those involved. We are disappointed at this time that no one has been brought to justice and would re-appeal to anyone who was at the ground on April 4, who witnessed this appalling behaviour, and has information which could help us identify those involved, to contact us.’
