ELITE GARDAÍ IN PARK

-

THE President has permanent uniformed gardaí based at Áras an Uachtaráin for his protection – and there are also members of the Garda’s armed Special Detective Unit (SDU) and the Defence Forces based there.

Among the SDU’s duties is responsibility for security for visiting VIPs, the investigation of threats to State security, and the monitoring of persons who pose such threats.

President Higgins has the service of four dedicated gardaí who provide security and transport. Sources suggest a very conservative estimate for the cost of Garda security would be €150,000 a year.

It was reported last year that two top-of-the-range BMWs, estimated to cost more than €200,000, were bought for the President.

The Defence Forces also provide security to the President and they have dedicated personnel stationed in the Phoenix Park. This includes the President’s aide-de-camp.

For security reasons, An Garda Siochána never release full details of security arrangements for the Office of the President.
