This week I’ll be eating… the last of the wild blackberries. At home in the country we fight an unceasing battle against the encroachment of brambles but in early autumn the many survivors deliver a rich bounty of fruit. I like to eat them raw or cooked gently with very little sugar, then topped with whipped cream. With eating apples they make an excellent crumble and there’s no need for extra sugar. Cooked down and passed through a sieve, you get a rich and lovely sauce for duck breasts. Last week I mentioned Masa, the Mexican restaurant where Super Miss Sue used to be. I said that this operation was from the people who run Etto, but it’s not. Masa is from the team at Bunsen, purveyors of the best hamburgers in Dublin (and, more recently, Cork). The Etto guys will be opening Uno Mas, with a Spanish influenced menu, nearby on Aungier Street later this year. It is very eagerly anticipated. EAT Galway the group of restaurants in the City of the Tribes that comprises Michelin-starred Aniar, Cava Bodega and Tartare Café + Wine Bar (reviewed here recently) are offering a ‘gastronomic odyssey’ opening with a tapas lunch at Cava, followed by a sixcourse menu at Aniar. Next day, you have brunch at Tartare and the price is €250 for two, €125 if you want to go solo. They also offer dinner with paired wines at Aniar and an all-day Sunday cookery school with chef JP McMahon for €295 per person. info@aniarrestaurant.ie Bord Bia is encouraging people to celebrate World Egg day which happens on 12 October (who knew?) by cooking an egg-themed meal. Eggs are a very healthy food, despite what you might have been told in the past, but we tend to think of them largely in terms of breakfast. I believe that a good omelette is one of the best things you can eat and the egg’s affinity with cheese is something well worth exploring. Get recipe ideas here: bordbia.ie/eggs
