HORAN’S RETURN A BRAVE ONE

-

THE sense of excitement spilling over on Thursday evening from James Horan’s formal acceptance of the job as Mayo football manager was surprising. Whoever took over from the outgoing Stephen Rochford was going to be loaded with a bunch of players who have been left heartbroken, repeatedly, over the last decade and a huge body of work on their hands — as much, maybe, an amateur psychologist as a football boss. Horan (right) admitted to this in terming this a ‘busy’ time in the county. But he also very quickly spoke of his personal thrill at taking over the role he held for four years previously. ‘I cannot wait to get started,’ he emphasised. Comebacks by bosses in the GAA are a rarity. Generally, the man on the sideline gets two or three years to do his damndest, and once that’s over and done with his good work is pushed to one side as a new man with big intentions presents himself. In recent weeks, however, two men who have proven themselves to be as good as it gets in management — Liam Sheedy annexed one AllIreland as Tipp boss of old, while Horan came up agonisingly short year upon year — are back to go one better. Each, to begin with, need to be applauded for their bravery. And also their deep commitment to their chosen games! Management in one’s own county is a burden. Basic expenses are offered, and huge swathes of personal time are still demanded. Equally, Horan and Sheedy know exactly how tough it is to get any county, in football or hurling, to the top of the ladder. They also knew the big demands of the supporter base in the two places. And yet they are still prepared to put themselves forward into the harshest glare of the GAA’s 24-hour spotlight. We’re lucky to have them back.
