Woman held over fatal stabbing of man in Cork

- By David Raleigh

A WOMAN in her forties has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of a 44-year-old man in Co. Cork.

Gardai discovered the body of the victim, Timmy Foley, at a bungalow on Dan Corkery Place, Macroom, around 1.30am yesterday morning.

The man’s brother, Jason Foley, and a woman were both found injured at the scene.

The woman had earlier been treated for minor injuries at Mercy University Hospital, Cork, before being arrested yesterday afternoon and taken to Bandon Garda Station where she was being questioned last night.

Jason Foley was taken to Cork University Hospital where he is expected to undergo emergency surgery for injuries that are said to be non-life-threatening.

The house, where Garda forensic officers spent the day gathering potential key evidence, is situated in a quiet cul de sac estate where many of the residents are elderly. It is also located close to a home for retired nuns as well as a support centre for people seeking to gain independent living accommodation.

According to sources, the deceased, originally from Clonakilty, had been a carer for his brother who was said to be living with an acquired brain injury.

He was known to gardaí and is understood to have recently served a prison sentence for grabbing a student by the throat on a bus and assaulting another person with a knife.

A Garda forensic tent was positioned all day on a footpath directly outside the front of the house.

Garda Superintendent Michael Fitzpatrick directly appealed to anyone who was in Dan Corkery Place, or its environment, between 9pm on Sunday night and 2am yesterday, ‘and saw anything suspicious’ to ‘please contact us at Macroom’ on 026-20590 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

‘We are treating it as a murder investigation,’ he added.
