Sullivan ends Bray’s bad run

- PAUL DOWLING

JOHN Sullivan grabbed a dramatic 94th-minute winner as Bray ended their losing streak in the league. Derry netminder Eric Grimes had just tipped over Sean Harding’s goalbound free. But from sub Jake Kelly’s resulting corner the away keeper fumbled at the back post and Sullivan headed in to halt Wanderers’ nine-game losing run in the top flight. But the home team were also thankful to their own custodian Evan Moran whose man-of-the-match display helped to stun the visitors at the Carlisle Grounds. Still harbouring outside hopes of a top-six finish before kick-off, Derry took a 15th-minute lead when Ronan Hale squared across the box to the unmarked Dean Shiels who rifled to the nets. However, the Seagulls restored parity on 25 minutes. Kevin Lynch’s free-kick found Sean Heaney who steered a header past gaolkeeper Grimes. A superb double save by Moran five minutes before the interval denied Ronan Hale and then Shane McNamee. Just before the break, Paul O’Conor cleared Ronan Hale’s effort off the goal-line. In a much tighter second period, Derry had the better chances but it was Sullivan who hit the target for Bray. BRAY WANDERERS: Moran; Walsh, Kenna, Heaney, Lynch (Crilly 65); Harding, Sullivan O’Conor, Noone (Gorman 80); Pender, Ellis (Kelly 84). Goals: Heaney 25, Sullivan 94.
