Out of the Wild Sky… and onto streets of Dublin for bank holiday

- By Emer Scully

‘DREAMLIKE’, ‘amazing’ and ‘beautiful’ were just three of the words used by awestruck visitors to describe Dublin’s third Macnas parade, Out of the Wild Sky, which formed part of the Bram Stoker Festival last night.

On a chilly Monday evening, the streets of the capital heaved with hungry wolves and various weird and wonderful men of fire, while bubbles filled the streets. The quintessentially Macnas sound of drums provided a backdrop to the performance which also featured giant men walking through the streets from Moore Street to Mary’s Lane.

There were also some creepy ghost-like child figures seemingly hanging in the air, side by side with dancers in white tutus.

Elsewhere, actors dressed in the masks of old trolls leaned their hands out to the screaming crowd... managing to frighten away a number of children in the process.

Caterina Muratore, 34, from Dublin watched the parade from Moore Street and thought it was hauntingly beautiful.

She said: ‘It was fantastic, amazing. We enjoyed it. It looked like being in a dream. It was a little bit haunting but beautiful.’

The parade was loved by its older audience members who described it as ‘brilliant’ and ‘eclectic’.

Zoltan Tran, 23, from Hungary, said: ‘My favourite part was the troll ladies. I do not even know what they were. They had weird faces and it was so creepy but creepy is good.’
