THE tasks take peculiar directions in this penultimat­e episode – tonight’s challenges include hula hoops, fez-wearing and some art involving a placenta. This weirdness seems to push the buttons of the contestant­s, and James Acaster and Rhod Gilbert end up in some very enjoyable rows with taskmaster Greg Davies.

GRIEVING Ray (Liev Schreiber) spends a lot of this opening episode of a new season looking for opportunit­ies to die or drink – but ultimately, he is a survivor. Schreiber’s utterly convincing portrayal of this broken-down bull of a man is what makes that struggle so compelling.

REVENGE FILM The Padre, Sky Store/ Virgin Movies

NICK Nolte stars as a grizzled US Marshal on the trail of revenge, which he plans to unleash on a conman in hiding – the ‘Padre’ of the title, played by Tim Roth – in a wellacted road movie.

SPOOKY MOVIE The Witch, 9pm, Film4

SET in 1630s New England, in the stark wilderness that colonial settlers made their home, this wellcrafte­d supernatur­al horror follows a family who have been banished by their Puritan brethren. Living in isolation, they fall prey to dark forces. Anya Taylor-Joy (pictured), Ralph Ineson and Kate Dickie star.

HAUNTING MYSTERY The Thirteenth Tale, 10pm, BBC4

A WELL-PACED and finely acted story for Halloween night, unfolding between an outwardly meek but sharp-as-you-like interviewe­r (Olivia Colman) and an ailing author with an extraordin­ary tale to tell (Vanessa Redgrave). It was originally shown on BBC2 over Christmas 2013.

LATE-NIGHT FRIGHTS Terrifier, 11pm, Sky Premiere

ONE for Halloween, this is an especially grisly killer clown slasher, spun off from director Damien Leone’s All Hallows’ Eve. If you don’t like clowns and gore, stay well away.
