WING GAMBLE PAYS OFF

- CRAIG HOPE

MIDDLESBROUGH rolled the dice when they signed prolific 10thtier striker Lewis Wing — but his first goal for the club suggests they’ve backed a winner. The 23-year-old struck a stunner to send Tony Pulis’ side into the last eight of the League Cup. Two years ago he was playing for Shildon in the Northern League and Boro made their move after he scored 37 times in one season. And his goal here was the difference as the Championship promotion hopefuls got the better of Roy Hodgson’s Premier League side. Wing was at the heart of everything as the hosts played on the front foot in the first-half. Boro, though, had failed to test Vicente Guaita in the Palace goal. And the Spaniard had still not made a save after Wing’s 25yard effort whistled into the top corner just before the interval.
