BRIDGE MASTERCLASS
SOUTH plays in 4♠, against which West leads the ♣J. How should South plan the play? THE important point is to keep East out of the lead (the diamond danger), so South enters dummy by way of a heart to lead a trump through East.
If East plays the ♠8, South must cover with the ♠9 and West’s ♠10 wins, but declarer’s ♦K is protected,
If East splits his trump honours on the first round, South goes up with the king and re-enters dummy with another heart to finesse East’s ♠ Q8, giving an overtrick.
