Sticky end for Whitey

AT 89 years of age, ill and wheel-chair bound, James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, pictured, was entitled to expect that, unlike the many victims of his life of crime, he was destined to die peacefully in his bed. But the truly gruesome details of his murder in jail this week – when he was beaten to death with a metal lock in a sock and his eyes gouged with a ‘shiv’ – suggest that somebody, somewhere was very determined to get to him before old age had a chance.
