Haunting artwork to mark 1918 Armistice

- By Jane Fallon Griffin news@dailymail.ie

A SIX-metre tall statue of a World War One soldier was unveiled in Dublin yesterday.

The sculpture, entitled The Haunting Soldier, will be on display in St Stephen’s Green until November 26 to mark the centenary of the end of the 1914-1918 conflict.

The piece depicts a weary man in military uniform laden with bags and his weapon returning home after the battle.

Made from scrap metal, the piece was created by Slovakian artist Martin Galbavy and was built by Chris Hannam of Dorset Forge and Fabrication in 2017.

The piece was commissioned by a woman from the area where it was built. It was brought to Dublin after amateur historian Sabina Purcell spotted the piece and arranged for it to be displayed here.

Minister for Heritage Josepha Madigan said: ‘I am delighted to support creative endeavours such as this that provide opportunities for people... to consider the sensitive legacies of our past.’
