McEleney’s Dundalk’s head boy

- PHILIP QUINN

A RARE headed goal from Patrick McEleney settled the latest reunion of Dundalk and Cork City in the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup final. ‘The cross was coming in for days, it was like a film,’ said McEleney of his 73rd-minute winner as Dundalk clinched a second League and Cup double under manager Stephen Kenny in four seasons. ‘It’s only the second header of my career,’ said the midfielder. ‘I got man of the match but I didn’t think I was playing that well. I just needed to do something and luckily I did.’ In front of 30,412 fans at Aviva Stadium, this was a final of fierce intensity, if few clear-cut chances. ‘There was a real edge to the atmosphere. Cork make you win everything,’ said Kenny after the 2-1 win. It was the fourth successive FAI Cup final between the teams and the first decided in 90 minutes.
