SWEETEST THING

-

DUNDALK’S Michael Duffy hailed yesterday’s Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup victory over Cork City as a sweeter feeling than lifting the Premier Division title as the Lilywhites won the Double for the second time in four seasons.

Cork were looking to make history of their own with a third successive Cup triumph but it was the League of Ireland champions that came out on top in the showpiece at Lansdowne Road.

Duffy missed a decisive spot kick in the penalty shootout between the sides Lilywhites add more silverware to the cabinet 12 months ago but was able to banish those memories yesterday.

‘What a feeling. I think that feeling there probably beats winning the league,’ said Duffy. ‘It was sort of relief on my behalf, wanting to win that cup after last year. It’s an unbelievable feeling. I was getting a bit nervous towards the end with some dangerous free kicks,’ the Dundalk winger said.

‘We held on well and I thought we deserved the win. It was a tight enough game but I thought we were the better team and everyone was brilliant in the end. This year has been brilliant. I came here to win trophies and I was gutted last year with how it went.

‘We’re looking to do the same next year and the Champions League is a big thing for us.’

Duffy had a chance to put a gloss on the 2-1 score line near the end when he raced through from his left-wing
