SCAMS THAT UNRAVELLED
IN May last year, the High Court cancelled compensation payouts to seven people who claimed they had whiplash injuries when the minibus they were in was rear-ended.
The claimants had sued the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland and had been awarded between €3,000 and €8,500 each in the Circuit Court – but the car which allegedly caused the accident was never traced.
A year earlier, five Dublin friends withdrew personal injury claims relating to an accident that a judge described as ‘a clear set-up’.
At full value, the group could have pocketed damages of €300,000, together with legal costs of €100,000.
