Keating’s ex is in the zone over that affair
BRENDAN O’CONNOR’S CUTTING EDGE Wednesday, 10.05pm - RTÉ1
THE late Caroline Aherne will be rightly remembered for The Royle Family, which is her undoubted masterpiece. But she also left us some moments of television gold with her earlier comic creation, the spoof chat show presenter Mrs Merton.
By far the show’s most memorable bit was when she opened an interview with Debbie McGee by asking: ‘So, what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?’
Let’s face it, we all have similar thoughts when we see some wealthy chap punching well above his weight in the rela-
tionship stakes.
No disrespect to either of them, but would Ronan Keating have ended up married to his first wife Yvonne if he had still been working in a shoe shop on Grafton Street?
Perhaps, but I’d imagine Ladbrokes would have been offering very long odds on the prospect.
Anyway, Yvonne turned up on Brendan O’Connor’s Cutting Edge during the week and proved herself to be a most entertaining turn.
I’d always had her marked down as a bit of a cold fish, but she came across as warm and engaging.
It was fascinating to hear the details of how she discovered that the former Boyzone singer was playing away from home.
Even more astonishing was how she later met the lover in question, dancer Francine Cornell, and ended up drinking a couple of bottles of wine with her.
At one point in the programme, she recalled: ‘Oddly, when we were saying our goodbyes, we gave each other a hug and wished each other well.
‘It was really like “Oh my God” and we were both just thinking “this is a weird situation, we have found ourselves in a crazy situation”.’
That’s one way of putting it, certainly.
