Trump gives thanks to himself for ‘a great job’

- By Mark Sherman and Jill Colvin news@dailymail.ie

THE US is celebrating Thanksgiving, in which they remind each other of what they have to be grateful for, and when the president was asked, he replied, himself. Donald Trump said he was most thankful for having a great family and for having made a huge difference to America since his election.

‘I made a tremendous difference in the country,’ he added. ‘This country is so much stronger now than it was when I took office that you won’t believe it. And I mean, you see it, but so much stronger that people can’t even believe it.’

Meanwhile, he has now targeted his country’s judges in Twitter attacks, even going so far as to demand the courts should defer to his administration and police forces on border security because judges ‘know nothing about it and are making our country unsafe’.

Incensed by a court ruling against the migrant asylum policy, yesterday, he said that police and soldiers he sent to the US-Mexico border ‘can’t believe the decisions that are being made by these judges’. And he has given troops on the border the ‘OK’ to use lethal force against migrants ‘if they have to’.

He also hinted at a partial government shutdown early in December over politicians’ refusal to allocate billions of dollars for a border wall.

‘Could there be a shutdown? There certainly could, and it will be about border security, of which the wall is a part,’ Mr Trump said.

He has gone after federal judges before who have ruled against him but this time chief justice John Roberts, the leader of the federal judiciary, issued a strongly worded statement defending judicial independence. He said: ‘We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges. What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them.’

He said: ‘The independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.’ In response, president Trump said about Roberts: ‘I like him and I respect him but I think we have to use some common sense.’ He added: ‘Sorry Chief Justice John Roberts, but you do indeed have Obama judges and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country.’

The drama began on Tuesday when president Trump went after judge Jon S Tigar, who had ruled against Trump’s asylum order.
