Empty shelves to highlight the risks of Brexit
FORGET Black Friday, it’s Brexit Friday at this London shop where the prices are enough to make locals’ eyes water – but they won’t be weeping for joy.
The ‘Costupper’ store on Peckham High Street was opened by the People’s Vote campaign to highlight the price hikes that British consumers can expect on the back of Brexit.
It’s the stock, rather than the prices, that have been slashed as customers are treated to rows and rows of near-empty shelves.
People’s Vote campaigner John Stalliday, who is running the pop-up ‘shop’, told a London newspaper: ‘Things like hormoneinjected beef, wilted flowers because of long customs queues and empty drug shelves are all things we may find in our shops after Brexit.
‘On Black Friday, people are getting really good deals.
‘We aim to highlight how Brexit is going to be a really bad deal for this country.
‘This shop shows how Brexit is going to hit people.’
Some shelves have been stacked with parody items including ‘Green Giant Prices’ sweetcorn and ‘I Can’t Believe the Price of this Butter’.
Meanwhile, tins of Brexit beans bear the slogan ‘Beanz Meanz Sighz’. And items such as hormone-injected beef and chlorinated chicken are also ‘on sale’, as campaigners have claimed that the quality of consumer goods will dive after Brexit.
Mr Stalliday clarified: ‘We are not selling anything. It’s something for people to come and have a look at. Lots of people have walked in thinking it’s a real shop, before having a laugh as they walk around.’
