Shane ties the knot in fairytale of Copenhagen

- By Sandra Murphy

‘Impossible to keep it secret’

SHANE MacGowan looked the picture of comfort in a pair of slippers when he finally got hitched in Denmark.

Wearing a red dress by UK designer Bella Freud and a flower crown, his bride Victoria Mary Clarke, 52, beamed back at her betrothed after a long wait for their big day.

She was even tracking her steps with a pink Fitbit on her wrist as she finally walked into his arms and said ‘I do’ 11 years after the Pogues hellraiser popped the question. At the time of the proposal, he drank port at breakfast, had no teeth and made Worzel Gummidge look smart, the fitness fan and yogi previously said.

But accompanied by A-list heart-throb Johnny Depp and close family and friends, she looked every inch the lady in red exchanging vows with her ‘sweet pea’.

Shane was hoping that his father, Maurice, who had been ill, could make the occasion. His mother Therese died in 2017 when her car crashed into a wall at Ballintoher, Co. Tipperary, on New Year’s Day as she was coming home from Mass.

The couple, who have been together for three decades, finally tied the knot after hinting about the big day last week. Shane, 60, wore blue trousers and a blue tie, with a black overcoat and a black trilby with a red feather.

The pictures appear to have been taken in front of a statue, likely Jason With The Golden Fleece by Bertel Thorvaldsen, an internationally famous Danish sculptor.

The statue is located in the artist’s museum in Copenhagen, confirming the pair were in the centre of the city for their nuptials.

On Thursday night, Victoria Mary Clarke posted a picture of her aboard a plane on Facebook captioned: ‘Heading off on a secret mission.’ In her column in the Sunday Independent, the now newlywed then revealed that Johnny Depp would provide the music at the wedding.

The film star, who has been friends with MacGowan for over 20 years, played the guitar as the pair tied the knot.

Victoria had said the couple had planned to keep their wedding on Monday totally secret, but friends and family wanted to help make their day special.

‘So, much as we might have liked our wedding to be a non-event, and because we have found it impossible to keep it a total secret, a few of our friends and family have elected to make it a tiny but beautiful thing,’ she revealed in the Sunday Independent.
