Diana storms in and leaves 4,500 homes in darkness

- By Lisa O’Donnell

THE ESB was last night working to restore power to 4,500 homes, farms and businesses in the aftermath of Storm Diana.

Strong winds damaged electricity structures, with up to 40,000 homes and businesses left without electricity by 11am yesterday.

Homes and businesses in Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Carlow and Kilkenny were the worst affected. However, electricity was restored to thousands of people throughout the day.

The storm hit our shores early yesterday morning, with severe winds continuing into the afternoon.

By yesterday evening, around 4,500 customers remained without power, and all customers were being assured that they should have their power restored by the end of the night.

The ESB issued a safety warning about fallen electrical wires, saying there is ‘extensive damage’ across the nation.

We are particularly appealing to farmers and landowners to be vigilant as trees or branches may have fallen on, or be leaning against, electricity wires. Members of the public were being urged to report any fallen wires to the ESB.

Following the strong winds brought by Storm Diana, Met Éireann predicts that weather conditions over the coming days will be more settled.

Today is set to get off to a wet start, but will brighten as the day goes on.

And there’s sNOw sign of a white Christmas according to RTÉ’s Joanna Donnelly.

There have been reports swirling over the past few weeks predicting a picture-perfect Christmas was on the way – but, alas, Joanna has rained on our parade.

Seeing the disappointment her professional opinion caused, she hurriedly said: ‘I don’t know actually. It’s still only November so it’s a little far away to tell just yet.’
