THE sister of an Irish soccer player took to social media last night to praise her brother and his wife for taking an active role in helping homeless people in Derry.

Mary-Jane McClean took to Facebook to highlight the kindness of her brother James McClean and his wife Erin, revealing that they are paying for a hotel stay for seven homeless people in Derry over the next week.

‘My brother has a huge heart’, she wrote. ‘Him & Erin just paid for 6 homeless people to stay in the Maldron hotel till Wednesday with food. We’re just away collecting them now and taking them to the hotel. [Al]ready left a wee man to the hotel who lays at the foyleside, the critter is buzzing.

‘Going to get collect more now, you are a credit James McClean & Erin McClean.’

While the couple were in Paris last night, the Stoke City and Republic of Ireland player’s father was driving those involved to the hotel. When asked if they could confirm the bookings, a worker at the Maldron hotel said that they ‘can’t give out that information’.

The 29-year-old is well known for supporting charities and has made a number of generous donations to groups in the past, including homeless groups in Derry.

In 2016, he offered to buy a caravan for a homeless woman who was pregnant, as well as donating £1,000 (€1,120) to help pay for the funeral of a little boy who was hit by a car.
