WHY SPURS ARE THE BEST CLUB IN THE LEAGUE

- By ANTHONY HAY

TOTTENHAM are the best-run club in the Premier League, according to former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan.

Jordan, who admits he has previously locked horns with chairman Daniel Levy, yesterday praised him for creating a title-chasing club.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: ‘I have no dog in the fight as I was involved with another London club and I had lots of run-ins with Spurs and Daniel Levy, but in my view Spurs are probably the best football club in the Premier League for a variety of reasons.’

Jordan, who says he does not like the ‘sovereign wealth behind Manchester City’, added: ‘Number one, it is because of Spurs’s organic development of players and their youth development. Two, because of their propensity to go down the pyramid and scout properly. No other club in the Premier League would have bought Dele Alli (from MK Dons).

‘Three, because they put top players like Harry Kane out on loan for passages of time in their career so they develop the right attitude. Four, because of their control over finances and five, because they are building the best stadium in the world.’

The next step is for Mauricio Pochettino to win his first trophy, but Jordan said: ‘My only concern for Tottenham is Pochettino and his ability to be a big-game winner. I think Tottenham have had two key opportunities in the last three or four years. No discredit to Leicester, Tottenham should have won the title that year and they also should have won the cup semi-final against Manchester United. It may show Pochettino’s inability to get across the line.’

Meanwhile, Tottenham will attempt to reopen contract negotiations with Toby Alderweireld.

Talks broke down last season but Pochettino confirmed yesterday that Spurs intend to trigger a one-year extension on his £50,000-a-week deal which expires at the end of the season.

However, Spurs are willing to listen to offers for Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama, GeorgesKevin Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen.

Dembele is recovering from an ankle injury and the 31-year-old is out of contract in the summer. Monaco are interested while Inter Milan had an offer rejected in the summer.

Wanyama may be the surprise name on that list. He does not wish to leave but has been hindered by niggling knee injuries. He is under contract until 2021 and has been discussed by West Ham among others.
