Move to new home can drive Spurs to the title

- By MARTIN KEOWN

DELAYS to their new stadium were supposed to derail Tottenham’s season. Instead, it has given them a distinct advantage as they prepare to hunt down Liverpool. With their new home yet to be finished, six of Spurs’ first nine games of the season were away. That means five of their next seven matches are at home — punctuated by winnable trips to struggling Cardiff and Fulham. Having scored 11 goals in their last two games, Tottenham are racing into gear. They should be targeting nothing less than the maximum 21 points from their next seven matches. I watched their 5-0 thrashing of Bournemouth and everywhere you looked there was a player Mauricio Pochettino has improved. For years we have debated who can lighten the goalscoring load on Harry Kane’s shoulders. In Son Heung-min, Tottenham now have another lethal finisher in rich form. Pochettino inherited Christian Eriksen and has transformed him into a master technician and a magician of a footballer. This team is looking formidable and the move into their new home will give them another shot in the arm. It could be the boost they need to win the title. Many expect Pochettino to join Manchester United at the end of the season and the fear for Tottenham is that everything he has built will be broken up. Rather than acting as a distraction, it looks like talk of his exit has sharpened the minds of his players. They know that if they can deliver the title, they will keep hold of their manager.
