The Yorgos Lanthimos-directed The Favourite, which was co-produced by Dublin company Element Pictures, was in contention for a number of awards, including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The movie stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz and is based on the latter years of Queen Anne. The three leading ladies also received nominations for their parts in the film, which is being touted as a contender in next month’s Oscars.

Meanwhile, Dublin-born Caitríona Balfe was also in contention for an award last night. She was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Drama category for her role as Clare Randall in the sweeping romantic drama Outlander.

Golden Globe-winning Saoirse Ronan was on presenting duty at last night’s ceremony which was held in Beverly Hills.

The 24-year-old joined fellow Hollywood A-listers Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Sam Rockwell, Octavia Spencer and Chadwick Boseman in handing out gongs.

At last year’s event, Saoirse took home the Best Actress award for her lead role in indie movie Lady Bird. Her latest film, Mary Queen Of Scots opens in cinemas on January 18.

Meanwhile, Bradley Cooper’s Oscar front-runner A Star Is Born was one of the favourites to take home an award for Best Picture-Drama, while The Favourite was looking like taking home the top prize in its category.

The Amazon comedy series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Ryan Murphy’s anthology series, The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story were among the top contenders for the television categories.

Lady Gaga, who won a Globe in 2016 for her role in American Horror Story, is nominated for two awards – for Best Actress in a Drama and for the song Shallow, from A Star Is Born.

The ceremony was hosted by Sandra Oh, star of Killing Eve, and Andy Samberg of TV sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
