Hot Favourite! Irish joy as film grabs a Globe
DUBLIN’S Element Pictures is celebrating after its film won Best Actress at the Golden Globes.
The Favourite, which the Irishbased company co-produced, was nominated in five categories at the prestigious ceremony and the team were delighted to come away with an award.
Olivia Colman’s portrayal of Queen Anne secured her the gong for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Element Pictures founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe were delighted with the win, stating: ‘We are thrilled for Olivia and all the team of The Favourite, led by visionary director Yorgos Lanthimos.’
The pair continued: ‘This award coincides with the opening weekend for The Favourite in Irish cinemas, which gives Irish audiences the opportunity to see the film for themselves.
‘We... hope Irish audiences respond to the film as enthusiastically as the international response to date.’ English actress Olivia, 44, won in her category ahead of Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu, Emily Blunt from Mary Poppins Returns, Eight Grade actress Elsie Fisher and Tully star Charlize Theron. The Favourite was pipped to the Best Motion Picture award by Green Book, which deals with racism in America’s Deep South in the Sixties. There was more Irish talent recognised at the ceremony, as Dubliner Catriona Balfe was nominated for Best Actress in a TV Series for her role as Claire Fraser in Outlander. She lost out to Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh.
