FA TO PROBE ‘NAZI SALUTE’
Hennessey claims he was waving
THE FA yesterday launched an inquiry into Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey’s apparent Nazi salute on a team night out. The Wales No 1 appears to make the controversial gesture in a photo posted on social media by team-mate Max Meyer. Other members of the Palace squad can be seen in the shot, taken at a dinner on Saturday night after the FA Cup thirdround victory at home to Grimsby. Meyer posted the picture on an Instagram story, which disappear after 24 hours. Hennessey, 31, denied yesterday he was making a Nazi salute, insisting he was merely waving and shouting at the picturetaker. However, the FA are looking into the matter and Hennessey could be charged by English football’s governing body. Even though the incident occurred away from the field, disciplinary chiefs can still take action against Hennessey. Palace refused to comment yesterday but they are likely to open their own investigation. Denying the accusations, Hennessey posted on his Twitter account: ‘Yesterday evening I had a meal with my team-mates and we had a group photograph. ‘I waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it and at the same time put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry. ‘It’s been brought to my attention that, frozen in a moment by the camera, this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute. ‘I can assure everyone I would never do that and any resemblance to that kind of gesture is absolutely coincidental.’
