A 32-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his mother.

Tomasz Krzysztof Piotrowski, from Cherrybrook in Ardee, Co. Louth, appeared before Drogheda District Court yesterday charged with the murder of Elzbieta Piotrowska.

Mother-of-two Ms Piotrowska, 57, originally from Poland, was found dead in her home in Clonmore in Ardee, Co. Louth on Tuesday morning.

Drogheda District Court heard yesterday morning that the accused was arrested and charged with the offence at 9.21pm on Wednesday by Garda Sergeant James McCumiskey at Drogheda Garda station. Sgt McCumiskey said that in reply to the charge and after caution, the man said: ‘No comment.’

Mr Piotrowski, who wore a grey jumper, navy tracksuit bottoms and trainers, did not speak during the short court hearing.

The 32-year-old sat in the dock and was supplied with an interpreter who sat beside him during the brief hearing.

Sgt McCumiskey said his application was that the man be remanded in custody to appear at Dublin’s Cloverhill District Court next Thursday, January 17. Mr Piotrowski’s solicitor Paddy Goodwin said the next court appearance could be dealt with by video link.

Mr Goodwin also said he had concerns about his client’s mental health and asked that he receive appropriate medical attention.

He also asked that legal aid be granted as the accused is not working.

Judge John Cheatle said that he would agree to both requests and he remanded Mr Piotrowski in custody and the case was adjourned to January 17.

Ms Piotrowska was found dead at her home.
