Man accused of bid to kill Katie Taylor father

- By Tom Tuite

A MAN accused of the murder of Bobby Messett in a shooting at a gym has also been charged with attempting to murder the father of boxer Katie Taylor.

Gerard Cervi, 31, of no fixed abode, but from the East Wall area in Dublin, was charged with murder in September of last year.

Mr Messett, 50, a father of three from Bray, Co. Wicklow, was shot dead as he answered the door at a boxing club in the town just before 7am on June 5 last year.

He had been about to start an early morning fitness session.

Two other men, including boxing trainer Pete Taylor, 57, who is the father of boxer Ms Taylor, were shot and hurt in the attack.

Mr Cervi, who had been granted legal aid, had been remanded in custody as the District Court cannot adjudicate on bail in murder cases. He faced his ninth hearing yesterday when he appeared before Judge Victor Blake at Cloverhill District Court.

Mr Cervi was charged with the attempted murder of Pete Taylor and also of Ian Britton, 35, who was shot in the leg during the incident. Mr Taylor received a gunshot wound to his torso.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Detective Sergeant Eamon O’Neill.

The accused was remanded in continuing custody to appear again at the same court on Thursday of next week. A book of evidence must be completed by the DPP and served on him before he can be sent forward for trial.
