‘He donated his heart and saved a man’s life’

THE tragic death of Charlie McCarthy saved another father who desperately needed a heart transplant.

Mr McCarthy, 32, was an organ donor and helped save the lives of others after his untimely death in 2017.

His sister Sinéad told the Irish Daily Mail that there was some ‘sense of comfort’ knowing that their brother’s death has helped other people.

‘We received a letter from the man who received Charlie’s heart; he was also a father and has three children. This man is alive today because of our Charlie,’ she told the Mail.

‘It’s some comfort to us to know that his death was not just in vain. Nicole [Charlie’s wife] received a letter at Christmas to say that the man was doing really well and that he regularly attends Mass to pray for Charlie.’

Sinéad says it’s another characteristic of her brother to help others.

‘Charlie always carried his organ donor card in his wallet. His eyes and heart and other organs were donated after his death,’ she said.

‘It’s Charlie in a nutshell. He was always helping people. Growing up, he always made sure to look out for us and ultimately his life ended in a cruel and tragic fashion in trying to help his best friend.

‘His organs have gone on to help other families and this is exactly what Charlie would have wanted.’
