Erin: ‘I cried at trolls’ remarks. So how do we expect children to cope?’

-

ERIN McGregor says she is terrified at the impact social media could have on young people if even she, as a grown woman, is regularly reduced to tears by things people say online about her.

The former Dancing With The Stars contestant is the sister of MMA star Conor McGregor, and has been in the media for a couple of years.

Mother-of-two Erin, 37, revealed how upset she was after reading cruel comments about her online.

Now she wants to educate people who think it’s acceptable to say nasty comments about people in the public eye. She said: ‘I’m a grown woman. I [appeared] on the Late Late Show and I literally howled. I was like a wild animal being wounded [reading the comments about me].

‘I couldn’t believe these grown women were online saying this. I was watching First Dates recently and people were talking about the girl’s makeup. I hope these people who are writing this stuff aren’t educating our kids or working with our kids.’

Erin was speaking on the podcast No Shame, which is hosted by former MMA star Paddy Holohan, who hopes to run for Sinn Féin in May’s local elections.

Erin added: ‘People think you’re not human because you’re on the telly.’

She revealed that she has been told to ignore the comments, but she feels that does not solve the problem. She said: ‘I was a grown woman who cried bitter tears. They recorded me on Dancing With The Stars crying.

‘The advice I got off the other “celebrities” were like, “just let it go”. I’m not letting it go.

‘What about the 15-year-old girl who’s getting lashed out of it online and she has no one to talk to. I wanted to do a documentary about that. There’s kids that are suffering at the hands of that. As parents, we have a responsibility.’
