Why not host a homecoming to celebrate Katie?

-

WE can be pretty sure now that Katie Taylor will never fight in Ireland again. It’s a shame, of course, but it is understood that professional boxing in this country has a recent past that makes many people nervous about hosting a big night honouring the sweet science. Still, why can’t we see the woman fight here? Taylor’s manager, Brian Peters, who has done more than most to ensure Ireland lives up to its proud history as a boxing nation, was especially downcast when speaking to one national newspaper.

Peters, who was once promoter and manager to WBA Super Bantamweight champion Bernard Dunne, said times were ‘very different’ from when the Clondalkin native was filling the then-O2 in Dublin — and went further, saying he was ‘finished’ with running shows in Ireland.

Boxing has always been troubled by its association with sinister individuals and organisations. Happily for boxing fans, though, the likes of Barney Eastwood, and then Peters, stepped forward with a love for the sport and smart business acumen and provided spectacular occasions in Belfast, Dublin and Cork.

Peters said that Taylor (above) and her team were lucky to have excellent opportunities in the United States as they plot her total domination of the women’s fight scene. ‘Unfortunately, I don’t believe Katie will be fighting in Ireland,’ was his bottom line.

But, why? Despite the unease some in the government and the Gardaí have about a big night of boxing, is it not possible to set up such a night for Katie Taylor — and, at the same time, ensure gangsters and gurriers don’t get to win?
