The rain of St Patrick

Met Éireann is warning of a chilly, rainy St Patrick’s Day. No change there then...

SURE it wouldn’t be St Patrick’s Day without some driving rain and bone-chilling temperatures.

While our national day will start out with some sunshine, Met Éireann is warning revellers to be sure to bring their brollies as the rain is expected come down in the early afternoon.

A forecaster told the Irish Daily Mail, that St Patrick’s Day tomorrow will be ‘cold and blustery’ but ‘there will be a lot of sunshine around, particularly in the morning and particularly in the east’.

‘Showers along the west and north will become widespread during the late morning, and in early afternoon, there will be some hail and thunder,’ the spokesperson said.

This will come as bad news for families as many parades across the country are only due to kick off around this time, with the annual St Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin beginning at 12 noon.

There are also some wintery falls expected over high ground across the north and northwest during the day.

The forecaster said that although temperatures will be between 7C and 10C, the wind-chill factor will make it feel colder.

The rain is expected to ease off tomorrow night, with clear spells developing elsewhere into Monday morning.

Met Éireann issued two yellow weather warnings yesterday which are due to expire at 12 noon today. The first one was for rainfall which is due to affect the west, the midlands, north-western and southwestern counties.

Some 25mm to 35mm of rain are expected, with a risk of spot flooding and the possibility of the rain turning to snow at times.

The second warning was issued for Donegal only, where there is a risk of snow and ice leading to poor driving conditions.

The colder weather conditions and snow in the north of the country are due to pass this morning as they moves towards Britain where they are bracing for heavy snow and high winds today in a weather event which has been dubbed the ‘Beast from the West’.

Today in Ireland, it will be wet and blustery across much of country, with spells of heavy rain.

The rain will ease in the afternoon and will brighten up, but scattered showers will remain, with a risk of hail and thunder.

The south of the country is set to be the mildest but it will get colder as the day progresses.

According to the forecaster, tonight is going to be cold with frost in places and some breezes.

After St Patrick’s Day, the weather is set to become milder.

‘Monday looks like it will become a bit milder but [there will] probably be a lot of cloud and just some light rain and drizzle,’ the forecaster said.

Tuesday will be largely similar to Monday, with temperature ranging from 9C to 12C.

There will be good periods of dry weather but it will be a cloudy and breezy day with patchy rain and drizzle moving eastwards across the country.
