PEOPLE POWER!

Even Hollywood stars are mad about Irish love story

- By Clare McCarthy

KOURTNEY Kardashian has given the new TV show Normal People the Hollywood stamp of approval.

The eldest of the Kardashian tribe shared a picture of her watching the show on her Instagram over the weekend with the caption, ‘this show’ – with a love heart and a pained face emoji.

The reality TV star, 41, is the latest among a line of celebs to express their love for the BBC/ Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel of the same name. James Corden, Richard E. Grant and Lisa Hannigan have all sung their praises for the Irish love story, which focuses on turbulent relationship between two young students, Connell and Marianne, played by Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, who move to Dublin to go to university.

Television host and comedian James Corden said it was the best show he has watched in a long time and even claimed it may have

‘Daisy and Paul are utterly astonishing’

changed his life. ‘Underplaying the impact of Normal People on Hulu has had on me for just a moment,’ Corden, 41, wrote on Twitter. ‘I honestly think it may have changed my life. [It’s] the best show I’ve watched in so long. Daisy EdgarJones and Paul Mescal are extraordinary. It’s ALL extraordinary.’

Well-loved actor Richard E. Grant, 63, of comedy classic Withnail and I, said that he could foresee ‘stellar careers’ for the two main stars of the show.

‘Most forensically detailed, emotionally charged series about falling in love that I’ve ever seen,’ wrote Grant on Twitter.

‘Daisy & Paul are utterly astonishing. Guaranteed stellar careers. Awe & respect.’

Irish musician Lisa Hannigan, 39, whose song Undertow is featured on the soundtrack to Normal People, praised the TV adaptation, saying it had done the book ‘such beautiful justice’.

She tweeted: ‘Normal People is astonishingly good. What a triumph. Hats off to everyone involved.’

Director Lenny Abrahamson thanked her for her musical contribution, and she replied: ‘Lenny, I was so blown away to hear it.

‘All of the music is perfect. I loved the book and you’ve done it such beautiful justice.’

The first episode of the 12-part series was aired on RTÉ on April 28 and caused a stormy debate on RTÉ’s Liveline the next day over the show’s ‘filthy’ sex scenes.

One caller said it was like something you would see in a ‘porno movie’ and another called in to say it showed ‘fornication’.

Last night’s instalment is sure to cause another stream of angry complaints after it featured full frontal nudity and the longest sex scene aired on Irish television.

Michael Cox, a bishop from the breakaway Tridentine wing of the Catholic Church, previously told The Irish Sun that it would be ‘morally wrong’ for RTÉ to air the programme.

He said: ‘It will be an outrage if RTÉ go ahead and transmit this. Morally it is wrong.’

He added: ‘Showing a grown man fully naked on TV? It would offend any right-minded human being.’
