GUESS WHO’S DONNING THE POUT HERE?
AS dopplegangers go, this is tremendous, classy and even ‘bigly’, as the US president might say himself.
Brendan Gleeson looks eerily like Donald Trump in a promo picture for a new TV drama.
The profile shot of the actor strikes a strong resemblance to Mr Trump, as he stands with his chest puffed out and with the president’s signature pout. Gleeson, 65, plays Mr Trump, 74, in The Comey Rule, a new mini-series that will air in late November – just after the 2020 US presidential election.
However, Mr Trump is unlikely to favour his depiction as the two-part series is based on the tell-all book, A Higher Loyalty, by former director of the FBI James Comey, who was abruptly fired by the president in May 2017. Gleeson briefly discussed the series with Joe Duffy on RTÉ’s Liveline in April when he revealed that he only agreed to take on the role of Trump on the condition that he wouldn’t conduct any interviews for the TV show.
Gleeson said: ‘I did the part on the proviso that I don’t do any press for it because I did it for the reasons I did it and it is what it is.’
He admitted that it was a difficult role as Trump got inside his head. ‘It... was a big jump I have to say,’ he said. ‘I’ll just say it was occupying my head for a bit.’
It is not the first time Gleeson has played famous figures – he previously starred as political giants Winston Churchill and Michael Collins.
But will he now be granted a notorious nickname by the Tweeter in Chief? Dead Ringer Gleeson, perhaps...
