FRANK KOs KEPA
Chelsea ready to offload their £72m flop goalkeeper
CHELSEA will listen to offers for Kepa Arrizabalaga as manager Frank Lampard looks for a new goalkeeper.
But the club are unwilling to accept any deal under £50million for the 25-year-old, who they bought for £72m from Athletic Bilbao two years ago. Chelsea would, however, consider, a long-term loan move for the Spaniard, provided interested parties agree to pay a significant portion of his wages.
Lampard has not been convinced by Kepa since his appointment as manager last summer and dropped him on two separate occasions this season, the latest coming against Wolves on Sunday.
Lampard opted for 38-year-old Willy Caballero for arguably the biggest game of his reign as Chelsea secured Champions League qualification.
Caballero is set to keep his place for
Saturday’s FA Cup final against Arsenal. Lampard is ready to recommend the club sign a new goalkeeper, with Burnley’s Nick Pope and Ajax’s Andre Onana among the options. Chelsea know they will struggle to recoup their outlay on club record signing Kepa but are aware that Lampard remains unconvinced by the shot-stopper.
Sportsmail understands there is a reluctance to sell Kepa given the strong possibility of taking a big financial hit. But a deal upwards of £50m could tempt them into selling, provided they can engineer a deal for his replacement. Chelsea may consider signing a less expensive goalkeeper to provide Kepa with more competition for his place if he stays. Club legend
Petr Cech, the performance and technical director, will play a key role in their goalkeeping plans. Meanwhile, Chelsea are making a last-ditch effort to persuade Willian to sign a new contract. The Brazilian is set to leave on a free transfer, with Arsenal interested in signing the 31-year-old Chelsea have offered him a two-year extension, but he wants three years.
