Britney Spears asks court to end father’s control over her life
BRITNEY Spears has asked a court to stop her father having control over her life.
Jamie Spears has been the singer’s legal ‘conservator’ for 12 years – overseeing her business and personal affairs since her 2008 public meltdown.
Back then, she famously shaved her head during a late-night visit to a hair salon.
Worth an estimated €50million, the pop star – who shot to fame in 1999 with Baby One More Time – praises the conservatorship overall in court papers, saying it ‘rescued her from a collapse, exploitation by predatory individuals and financial ruin’.
But the 38-year-old motherof-two wants to loosen those ties with her father. Mr Spears temporarily stepped down as conservator in 2019, citing health issues ,and was replaced by her manager, Jodi Montgomery,
whom Ms Spears now ‘strongly prefers’ to keep in the role. ‘Britney is strongly opposed to James’s return as conservator of her person,’ according to a paper filed by her lawyer Samuel Ingham to the Superior Court of California in LA.
Conservatorship is when a guardian is appointed to manage the life of someone unable to make decisions due to poor physical or mental health. Mr Ingham suggests that a change to the role reflects her desire ‘not to perform at this time’.
It was first set up after Ms Spears’s conduct started deteriorating following her divorce from Kevin Federline, during which she lost custody of her children Jayden, now 13, and Sean, 14. Another hearing is due to take place next week.
