Micro-weddings fast becoming go-to option for pandemic nuptials

- By Ronan Smyth

BETROTHED couples are turning to the concept of ‘micro-weddings’ due to the pandemic with a bigger party planned for some date in the future.

So says wedding expert Naoise McNally of OneFabDay.com.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mail, Ms McNally said that with new Covid restrictions limiting numbers to 50 people – including staff – and a strict 11.30pm curfew now imposed, couples are having more intimate weddings and planning the bigger celebration for 2021.

Meanwhile, wedding planner Sharon McMeel told Lunchtime Live this week that couples should use their smaller weddings to focus on things that are important to them.

Ms McMeel said: ‘What people find is when they’re not spending the money on feeding or entertaining 100, 200 or 300 guests they get to spend it on stuff that might be more important to them.’

Ms McNally said that a survey of their readers revealed that of the couples who have had to change their wedding due to Covid-19, 37% told OneFabDay.ie they are having a two-part wedding.

‘For a lot of people weddings can be quite stressful and the idea of having a lot of people and having to divide your time between 100-plus guests can be quite difficult,’ said Ms McNally.

‘Having the smaller wedding gives you more time with individual people like your family and friends, especially right now.’

Ms McNally said given all the restrictions in place, the trend in recent weeks has been towards hosting micro-weddings.

‘We’re seeing this happen a lot in the last few weeks because obviously people can’t have a 140-150 person wedding,’ she said.
