Boris told top envoy: Donald’s making US great again

- By Larisa Brown

BORIS Johnson believed Donald Trump was ‘making America great again’, leaked exchanges with the US reveal.

He also told Woody Johnson, the US ambassador to Britain, in August 2017 that Mr Trump was doing ‘fantastic stuff’ on foreign policy issues in nations such as China, Syria and North Korea.

The details come from notes taken by US officials during calls and meetings between the pair. The exchanges could see the British prime minister dragged into America’s presidential election campaign, with Mr Trump eager to advertise his support overseas.

His Democrat rival Joe Biden is on record as calling Mr Johnson a Trump ‘clone’. Conversations between the US president and ex-prime minister Theresa May were also revealed by the Sunday Telegraph.

Mr Trump pushed back on Mrs May’s request to expel Russian diplomats after the Novichok poisonings in Salisbury in 2018. She told the president he had to be ‘tough’ when it came to Vladimir Putin.

But he said: ‘I have to talk to this guy. He has a thousand nukes.’ When she explained how Mr Johnson withdrew from the leadership campaign, Mr Trump said: ‘Oh, so you were drafted like in baseball. But really I think you were plotting this all along.’

A spokesman for Mr Johnson said: ‘He is committed to the important relationship between the UK and US and to enhancing the work we do together to ensure the prosperity and security of our citizens.’
