join the North London club, another player who has interested United in recent weeks.

On Bale, Sportsmail understands Real will agree to pay more than 50 per cent of the Welshman’s astronomical wages of up to £500,000 a week to facilitate the player’s departure.

‘Gareth still loves Spurs,’ his agent Jonathan Barnett told BBC

Sport Wales last night. ‘It’s where he wants to be.’

Tottenham are believed to have explored a loan and a permanent deal for Bale. And such is their determination to clinch the move that they are willing to sanction the loan of England midfielder Alli, 24, (below) who was taken off at half-time by manager Jose Mourinho in Sunday’s miserable 1-0 defeat at home by Everton.

Spurs are confident they will re-sign Bale, a player they sold to Real for a then world-record fee of £85.3million in 2013.

Tottenham have explored luring back the 31-year-old in previous seasons — but this is the closest they have come to making it a reality.

While United were interested in signing Bale as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s England forward Jadon Sancho, Tottenham last night moved into pole position as Levy tries to make a statement in this transfer window.

Spurs were also locked in advanced talks to sign £25m-rated Reguilon from the Bernabeu.

Similarly, United had tracked the speedy left back, capped once by Spain and who, after making his Real debut in 2018, spent last season on loan at Sevilla — winning the Europa League last month. .

It is understood that while Reguilon was originally attracted by a move to United, he has been made aware of how desperate Mourinho is to work with him, which has made a move to Spurs a very strong possibility. Real want a buy-back clause in any deal for Reguilon, and Spurs are said to be more open to agreeing to that stipulation than United. Tottenham are almost certain to sanction a loan move for Ryan Sessegnon should they land Reguilon. Spurs, it is understood, already have various interested suitors for the 20-year-old. Bale was one of the options being considered by United if they abandon their pursuit of Sancho over Dortmund’s demand for a fee of £108m. Spurs were able to move more swiftly and United were only prepared to commit £10m to a deal for the Welshman. If there is no breakthrough in negotiations for Sancho, United are likely to focus on Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic, Douglas Costa of Juventus or Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman. Alex Telles, of Porto, is an option at left back if they lose out in the race for Reguilon as well.
