Floody hell! Week of wet weather forecast

- By Lisa O’Donnell

WE’RE being urged to stay at home as the fight against Covid-19 continues... and judging by the wet weather ahead, we won’t take much convincing this week. After a dreary bank holiday weekend, forecasters are warning of further downpours in the coming days, with thunderstorms expected to hit today and possible flooding by Friday. According to Met Éireann, low pressure will continue to drive the weather pattern this week, leading to unsettled conditions. The week will begin cool and showery, but will become milder and wetter later on. Today will start off sunny with some scattered showers. However, this rainfall will turn heavy later in the day, with hail and a risk of isolated thunderstorms developing. Meanwhile, tonight will see the west and south of the country hit with thundery conditions. Heavy and prolonged showers, along with hail and isolated thunderstorms, will continue to feed in off the Atlantic, affecting mainly the western half of the country and coastal counties of the south.

These conditions will continue into tomorrow morning, and will gradually spread across the country throughout the afternoon.

Met Éireann said tomorrow will see highest temperatures of 9C to 11C, along with strong winds.

The wet weather will continue until evening when there will be clear spells before heavy rain will sweep in from the Atlantic to affect most parts by morning.

Downpours will continue over the week, and will even bring the possibility of flooding on Friday.
