MIXED martial arts fighter Conor McGregor is being sued in the High Court by a young woman and her mother.

Proceedings have been served against the 32-year-old Dubliner, who is one of the world’s highest-paid athletes, over events alleged to have taken place in 2018.

The precise nature of the allegations cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.

A second defendant, James Laurence, who is said to be an associate of UFC fighter Mr McGregor, has also been sued in the personal injuries action.

High Court records show that the case was launched on Monday, and that an affidavit has

‘Confident justice will prevail’

been filed by the woman, who is said to have known Mr McGregor for many years.

Her mother has also taken a smaller personal injuries action.

Mr McGregor has denied any wrongdoing.

The matter was previously the subject of an extensive Garda investigation, but the Director of Public Prosecutions decided no charges should be brought.

In a statement to Independent. ie, Mr McGregor’s spokesperson, Karen J Kessler, said: ‘After an exhaustive investigation conducted by the gardaí which, in addition to interviews of the plaintiff, included interviewing numerous sources, obtaining witnesses’ statements, examining closed circuit footage and the cooperation of Conor McGregor, these allegations were categorically rejected.

‘The plaintiff knows the facts contradict the assertions in this lawsuit. Mr McGregor will dispute any claims and is confident that justice will prevail.’

Coleman Legal Partners, which is representing both women, said the matter was before the courts and no further comment could be made. No date has yet been given for a hearing of the case at the Four Courts.

Mr McGregor is said by Forbes Magazine to have earned $48million (€40million) last year alone, and has said himself he will be a billionaire by the time he is 35.

He calls himself The Notorious, and announced on Christmas Eve that his fiancée Dee Devlin is expecting their third child.

His last appearance before the courts in Ireland came in November 2019, when he was convicted of assaulting a man in a Dublin pub and fined €1,000.

Addressing Dublin District Court, Mr McGregor said at the time: ‘What I did was wrong. I would like to apologise to the injured party and I can assure you nothing of this nature will happen again regarding me.’

The victim had received an undisclosed sum of compensation and had already accepted Mr McGregor’s apology ahead of that court hearing.

The court heard Mr McGregor had 18 prior convictions from 2018 going back to 2009.

The majority were for driving offences, such as speeding, holding a phone while driving, driving in a bus lane and a documentary offence, which resulted in fines.

He was also given the Probation Act in 2009 for an offence of assault causing harm.
