Tubs is his mum’s Prints Charming

- By Archie Mitchell

HE MAY be best known for the ‘Late Late’ Show, but it seems Ryan Tubridy’s starts have been early, early.

For the RTÉ broadcaster has told how he’s been rising extra early every morning to deliver the newspapers to his cocooning mother, Catherine.

Since the beginning of the year the Dubliner has been getting up, heading to an early opening shop, and dropping two newspapers on his mammy’s doorstep so she can enjoy them over a cup of tea. But when he arrived yesterday morning he found a gift waiting for him – an envelope filled with pictures of her grandchildren from Christmas 2019.

Yesterday, he told listeners of his radio show how touched he was by the gesture.

‘For the month of January, I started by accident, I said I’d drop in a couple of papers to my mother on the way into work,’ he said.

‘So I go down to an early opening shop and buy a couple of papers... This morning, I was walking along, and the bird song was so beautiful.

‘The birds are singing a little earlier than they normally would have done in the last month or so and the sky is brightening a little earlier.

‘Anyway, I drop the papers in to the mother, and because I don’t see her because I’m trying to encourage her to stay in and have a cup of tea in the morning with the paper, I just leave them on the doorstep and I spirit myself away.

‘This morning, she left a gorgeous thing. It was an envelope with photographs of all the children in the family from Christmas a year ago, as a little gift for me.

‘I thought, “wow, that is a nice thing”. What a nice thing to do, because it’s a difficult time.’

Tubs, who dedicated last year’s Late Late Toy Show to her, has previously spoken about how difficult the first lockdown was for the close-knit pair.
