Young boy rescued as father is feared drowned in river tragedy

Rising Star goes blonde as she hopes for glory with first award nomination

A YOUNG child was rescued from a river yesterday as his father is feared to have drowned saving him.

A passer-by near the banks of the River Barrow in Co. Kildare jumped in after hearing the cries for help and helped pluck the child to safety.

Sadly, he wasn’t at that stage able to rescue the father who had gone missing when the passer-by and rescue services returned to the scene.

Emergency services rushed to Ardreigh Lock yesterday evening when a man was seen holding a child above the water.

The father and son were enjoying a kayaking trip together when they hit trouble. A pedestrian is reported to have heard their cries for help coming from the river and entered the water in a bid to help, according to local reports.

The pedestrian brought the child to safety, but upon returning to the scene the boy’s father had disappeared. A large crowd had gathered in the area as emergency services desperately searched for the missing father.

The area is popular with walkers and families and was particularly busy with the good weather.

The major search and rescue operation involved gardaí, the Civil Defence and a local canoeing club, who searched the river until dusk.

Two Coastguard helicopters were also deployed to the area to assist in the search from the air, while also using drones.

Sadly, the man had not been found, and the search was stood down for the night because of bad light.

A garda source said the missing man lived nearby, but could not give any further details, except to confirm the search would resume ‘at first light’.

The garda also wanted to acknowledge the selfless bravery of the young man who entered the river to help rescue the child, whose details were not released.

A Garda spokesman said: ‘A multiagency search operation took place today, Sunday February 28, 2021 following reports of a kayak overturning in the River Barrow.

‘A juvenile was rescued from the water and was treated at the scene by paramedics. A further person is believed to be still missing.

‘The operation has ceased for tonight [Sunday]’

Emergency personnel in the region also participated in the search for a missing woman in Carlow yesterday.

The operation was stood down after a body was discovered.

IT’S the royal role that landed her a Golden Globe nomination.

And Emma Corrin took a leaf out of Princess Diana’s stylebook as she stepped out with a blonde cropped hairdo ahead of the awards ceremony which took place overnight in the US.

Also pictured out and about was a relaxed Anya Taylor-Joy, who was spotted pausing to light a cigarette in LA at the weekend. The 24-year-old was also a rival in the best actress in a drama series category for her role as chess champion Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit.

She was also nominated in the film category for her role in Emma which will see her pitted against Rosamund Pike for I Care A Lot.

Element Pictures’ Normal People and its star Daisy Edgar-Jones were among the nominees in the miniseries categories, while Irish animated film Wolfwalkers was also shortlisted.

Other cast members of The Crown up for awards included Josh O’Connor, who plays Prince Charles, Gillian Anderson for her role as Margaret Thatcher, and Helena Bonham-Carter, who was Princess Margaret.

Vanessa Kirby and Carey Mulligan were both contenders for best actress in a drama motion picture with Miss

Kirby nominated for her turn in Pieces Of A Woman and Ms Mulligan for Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman.
