Bid for a piece of the old life... from your sofa

- By Helen Bruce

A BUSTLING city centre may seem a distant memory right now, but a number of colourful scenes of the capital are going under the hammer.

An auction house is encouraging art lovers and newcomers to virtually attend its online auction today.

Whyte’s auctioneers said the 230 lots in the Spring Online Art Sale carried guides from as low as €100 to a top estimate of €2,000, with the possibility of snapping up a bargain that could spiral up in price.

With current restrictions in place there will be no public viewing for the auction, but as well as offering a virtual tour of the lots, Whyte’s website has an Art Virtualiser app to help potential bidders imagine how each picture will look to scale on their wall.

Works include Norman

Teeling’s Flower Sellers, Grafton Street (€700€1,000), Stephen Cullen’s colourful Sunny Day, Grafton Street, 2009 (€800€1,200) Desmond Carrick’s Wet Sands at Booterstown (€1,000-€1,500) and others from Colin Gibson, Peter Pearson and Tom Roche.

Opening the sale is a selection of paintings by John Francis Skelton, an artist who is gathering momentum; among his works is A Soft Light, Inisheer, Aran Islands (€600-€800). The artist’s father, John Skelton senior is also well represented in the sale, with artworks in oil, watercolour and ink.

Several prints by Louis le Brocquy are up for grabs, with guide prices from €800 to €1,200, while a selection of prints from well-known Irish contemporary artists are also going under the hammer.
