Sarah and Sean Sean got down on one knee and popped question on the Aran Islands in picture perfect proposal

- With Diana Bunici

SARAH Hanrahan will never forget the night she first set eyes on her fiancé Sean 13 years ago. Why? Well, because she knew from that very moment that she would marry him one day – she even called her mother to tell her so!

The content creator and travel enthusiast doesn’t consider herself the ‘romantic type’ but from that initial meeting, she instantly knew they were destined for a lifetime of adventure together.

‘My fiancé and I met at a party,’ Sarah explains.

‘We chatted all night and as soon as I left he went around to our mutual friends trying to extract information about me. I was back at the same house party the following week and Sean walked in with a rose at about 2am. The rest is history, as they say.’

‘I wouldn’t consider myself a romantic but, for whatever reason — and I genuinely can’t remember now what specifically made me do this — I called my mom the night after I met him and told her I’d met the man I was going to marry.’

While Sarah jokes that Sean ‘drives her up the wall’ at the best of times, she says that her partner makes her feel safe in her skin, that she is able to be herself around him.

‘He accepts me fully for who I am which is such a comfort,’ she adds. ‘We also share a lot of the same values which makes sharing

a life together feel very natural. Plus, he’s an absolutely amazing cook which is a dream trait in a partner, if you ask me!’

Despite marriage not being on her ‘to-do list’, Sarah got the surprise of a lifetime last December when Sean popped the question on the Aran Islands. After 13 years together, she figured it wasn’t something they would necessarily ‘bother doing’, so she was really caught off guard.

The relaxed bride-to-be explains how her partner planned the proposal in the west of Ireland and if anyone doubts she had any inkling, she reveals how she joked she wasn’t ‘marriage material’ only minutes before he popped the question!

‘My parents live on the Aran Islands where Sean and I often visit. He planned to propose there on our most recent visit. He told me he wanted to ‘use up’ the last piece of film on his camera so he could get the roll printed and I didn’t think anything of the situation.

‘I had stuffed my jacket with carrots before we went on a walk, as there are a lot of beautiful horses and donkeys on the island that I like to visit, and off we went — camera and carrots in tow! As he set the camera to record, he ran over and got down on one knee. It was super simple and super lovely.’

The pair, who have travelled the world together, celebrated the moment with a bottle of bubbly with Sarah’s mother before messaging their family and friends to share the happy news.

They dream of a Dublin city wedding one day. A day that is filled with ‘good food and a great atmosphere. No fuss, just a great day out and everyone heads home happy… hopefully!’
