You’ve got wrong idea! Shatner blasts back at Wills amid space voyage row

- By Rebecca English and Xantha Leatham

WILLIAM Shatner yesterday accused Prince William of having the ‘wrong idea’ about space travel.

The actor, who played Captain Kirk in Star Trek and this week went into space for the first time at the age of 90, said he disagreed with William’s view that we should ‘try to repair this planet, not try to find the next place to go and live’.

‘He’s going to be king of England one day, a lovely, gentle, educated man, but he’s got the wrong idea,’ Shatner told Entertainment Tonight, a US TV show. ‘The idea here is not to go “Yeah, look at me, I’m in space”. This is a baby step into the idea of getting industry up there, so that all those polluting industries, especially, for example, the industries

‘We’ve had enough talk’

that make electricity [are] off of Earth.’

Shatner travelled to space on an 11-minute flight with Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos.

The Queen meanwhile has been praised for expressing her anger over the inaction of world leaders on the climate change crisis.

The 95-year-old monarch was heard saying at a public engagement in Cardiff that it was ‘really irritating when they talk, but they don’t do’.

Kate Blagojevic, head of climate at Greenpeace UK, said: ‘The Queen is right. The Cop climate summit is now just days away but instead of tangible action to limit warming, all we hear is cheap talk from world leaders.

‘World leaders must end all new fossil fuel projects, adopt ambitious emissions-reduction plans so we can halve global emissions by 2030, reject plans to open a global market in carbon offsetting and ensure wealthy countries are financially supporting others to transition away from fossil fuels. Only then will we be able to say that the Cop climate summit has been a success.’

Chris Venables, head of politics at Green Alliance, said: ‘We’ve had enough talk from world leaders. Ahead of Cop26, we need the Prime Minister and the Chancellor to get out of the doors fast with an ambitious climate plan and green spending review. If they fail to deliver, the Queen may well be having a word with them.’
